Val: Other: Val's birthday and Dora's belated birthday
Val has been four for rather more than half a year when he decides enough is enough. Each year he ages is one year closer to adulthood ... or as close as he ever got, anyway. Two hundred is maybe not quite adult for a dragon.

First he quells lurking fears by having Jack measure his height and wingspan to ensure that he actually is growing. Lacking any real idea of when he was born the first time beyond "when it was warm," he chooses Midsummer Day to serve as his birthday. In the incredibly convoluted calendar of this locale that falls on the twenty-first of June.

What he didn't expect was Dora's resistance to the idea.

"I'm going to grow up," he said at last, stubbornly, to she who had been five over two birthdays now. "If you want to stay older then you have to grow up too." He added generously: "I'll share my birthday with you this year." At last she agreed.

So a compromise cake was baked, lemon with pink icing on one side and chocolate on the other. The pink side has six blue candles and the chocolate side has five.

Val thinks this is an incredibly bizarre way to mark the turning of age, but he's not about to argue with tradition ... or cake.

    A few facts about Val
Val is a character in [info]bearandbarnacle. Some pertinent information:

    1. He comes from the same fandom as Xellos and Zelgadis, and the same universe as Xel.

    2. He is a dragon. He does in fact breathe fire -- of a sort. He doesn't do it often because he's not very good at it yet.

    3. He appears to be about four. He is a normal-looking barely-past-toddlerhood child, apart from turquoise hair and black, feathery wings. Occasionally he has a tail (see default icon), though this is rare. All sentient dragons can take on human-like forms; younger ones, however, tend to have a bit of difficulty eliminating appendages that don't have analogous ones in humans, such as wings and tails.

    4. As of the beginning of play, he is reluctant to speak to most. He was an adult before his god decided to de-age him and allow him a second chance at life, and was necessarily a fairly cultivated and persuasive speaker. Trying to filter himself through a four-year-old brain is resulting in some inhibiting difficulties.

    4. Characters with any psychic/astral knowledge will wish to know the following:

    a. Val is extremely old. Fourteen hundred years or so. He has overtaken Xellos as the oldest character in play.
    b. He remembers every one of those fourteen hundred years. They were not all pleasant. Some, in fact, could be described as "hell on earth" without one iota of inaccuracy.
    c. He is in deep mourning for someone who meant the world to him. In fact, when that person died Val tried to destroy the world. That was, in fact, the last thing he was doing before arrival in Margate.
